Hill View Barn

Hill View Barn – Surrey

Project Role: Main Contractor Architect: Holland Green
Renovation and extension of a traditional Barn conversion nestled in the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). This sensitive refurbishment created an elegant, modern living space while retaining the home’s beautiful time-worn character.

This was a genuine passion project for our homeowners. Their cherished family home for decades, this rural idyll was the place their children played and grew up in. With the children now living away, our clients were keen to breathe new life into the space while conserving its characterful core.

Light-filled Space

Working collaboratively with HollandGreen architects, the project involved reconfiguring the interior to create a light, airy living space. To open up the interior, we merged several of the smaller ground floor rooms. This created a capacious lounge area – with ample storage and shelves – and revealed the bones of the barn’s beautiful oak frame.

We replaced the original cramped stairwell with a bespoke glass and timber staircase. This, combined with a glass landing balustrade, floods the home’s centre with light.

A Beautiful Family Space

To create further space, a glass extension was added to the home’s kitchen. Comprising floor to ceiling glass panels, the sliding doors fully open, merging indoors with outdoors.

A new patio leading down to a sunken garden provides the perfect spot to drink in the view.

Solar Energy

Sustainability is a key consideration for all Signature Build’s projects.

Ground-mounted solar PV panels, tucked discreetly behind the walled garden, supply the home’s electricity and heat. Its battery storage system also storing energy for use at peak times.

To preserve the appearance of the two-hundred-year-old barn and limit the impact on the environment, several materials were re-purposed, including York stone paving and flint and brick walling.

The final touch of adding mature planting to the garden melds the finished home seamlessly with its countryside surroundings.
